I would love to see a similar study for text and translation, and see how well network architectures that are “hyper” optimized to death for PTB, wikitext, enwik8, WMT’14 EN-FR, EN-DE, etc. transfer to “new” test sets from same distribution, or even perhaps to other text domains.
If we see similar results for PTB, then this is actually quite good news for deep learning research community, where the typical process of hyper optimizing for performance on a smallish dataset *does* lead to discovery of new methods that generalize better.

You see the same thing in machine learning research papers as well.
Many people start attacking a problem by deploying the most sophisticated method possible with the belief that it will lead to the best results. I believe it might be better to chisel away at the complexity and find the simplest possible combination that expresses the key ideas.
Michelangelo was asked about the difficulties that he must have encountered in sculpting his masterpiece. His reply: "It is easy. You just chip away the stone that doesn’t look like David."

Alright, I want to break into a touchy subject: let’s reason through what should be done about trans kids, shall we?

This is likely either going to be a hit or it’s going to be very unpopular and I guess we’ll just have to see what happens.
Before we can really get into what should be done, there’s a basic series of questions that need to be answered:

1) Are trans kids for real?
2) If so, is it nature or nurture?

There are others that follow from the answers to these, but this is a good plce to begin.

Like almost everything else in life, the answer to this is yes and also no.

And also, it depends on what we mean when we use the term “real”. If we’re asking whether or not children experience gender dysphoria, then yes, TS kids are unequivocally real.

Zizek was right about voicing the crass id to show you mean no harm in situations of identity friction with strangers but he picked an awkward example. It's trivially true if you see like a Russian talk to a Ukrainian and they immediately joke about being at war or something.
The problem is that the same operation can be used in a malicious way to promote harm so people group both under the heading of "ironic jokes" even though they are being used in opposite strategies. But if you conflate them too easily you won't understand Internet subcultures.
People have reasonably complained that many jokes exist in a context where there is no confirmed reciprocity. Like a podcast simulates a conversation but the people listening in haven't bought into the idea that being bigoted is transparently stupid - or might not believe you do.

1/ Who wants to hear some scientific intrigue?

A few weeks ago, a group of physical chemists posted a paper online announcing the observation of superconductivity at room temperature.

Today I posted a comment pointing out something funny in their data.

2/ Room-temperature superconductivity has been a holy grail in physics for literally over 100 years. If we could find a material that was superconducting at room temperature, it would allow us to transport electrical power for free, and would revolutionize a bunch of industries.
3/ There is no fundamental reason (that we know) why some material couldn't be superconducting at room temperature. But after a century of trying to find such material the best superconductor still needs to be cooled to 90 Kelvin (-183 Celsius).

Listen up kids. So when #Trump wants to replace #SNAP benefits with a box of prepackaged dry goods, it’s not just about #fruits and #veggies. It’s about power, race, ethnicity, labor, energy, disability, and language as well.
2) What people eat and what people are supposed to eat and what people had access to eat has always been informed by power. In ancient times, it may have been the nobility eating meat and wheat bread while peasants ate potages. Nowadays, it’s what people should not eat.
3) Just because people are poor does not mean that they do not have their own food preferences, ideas about food, or habits around food. Folks who use SNAP/#foodstamps will use their benefits, as they are able, to buy the food they can afford within these frameworks.

#Fact 1 - The Wage Gap is real. People who says it's not haven't read the data.

However, in places like the USA, the wage gap is *not* mostly due to sexism like many #femnist #WomenInScience are claiming it is today. Disparate outcomes doesn't imply disparate treatment.
Women typically choose fields that are lower paying; even in the #STEM fields. To attribute that to sexism only or even mostly is a very dishonest way of deriving an answer for this complex disparity.
