A high value skill is a skill that is in high demand, but takes a lot of time and sacrifice to develop - which is why many people don't have one. So, people who have it get paid a lot of money and they don't have competition.
E.g. Think of a heart surgeon compared to a General practitioner. How many heart surgeons do you know? Compare that to the plenty GPs you know.

Developing a high value skill requires a lot of practice, commitment and sacrifice.
These days, people find it hard to focus on something until they become good at it. That is why the few of us who take the time to develop high value skills get paid a lot.
And someone with a high value skill can't be easily replaced.

You know what? I will write "high value skills" as HVS going forward to make it easier for me
Having a HVS also puts you in control of your income and gives you the power to say "fuck you". My HVS are centered around selling, high level persuasion, manipulation and seduction. Don't worry. I use those for good purposes.
I spend tons of money to get resources and unmeasured amount of hours consuming anything on those areas. And I practice and practice.
One of my high value skills is direct response marketing or RSS (remote selling system). It is why I can say "fuck you" to many offers. Some months ago, a well known company offered us N80m for a deal.
The deal was good but I realized it was going to steal some of my freedom. So, I said "fuck you" - Many people spend their time developing average skills. That automatically puts them in the red ocean of competition.
So, they are stuck with an average income and an average lifestyle. If you want to be a programmer, be a high value one. Not all these mediocre computer science graduates all over the place.
Sometimes, a skill can be high value or average based on the amount of effort you put into it. E.g. Let's say we have 2 fashion designers A and B.
A is mediocre and as a result, charges less and struggles while B is a high value fashion designer. So, he gets paid a lot and is always overbooked.
Some high value skills are;

- Top notch negotiating

- Closing sales

- Project management

- Digital marketing (Wide)

- Coding/software development

- Script writing

- Copywriting

- Artificial intelligence

- Fashion design (high level)
Right now, I am learning all I can about AI (Artificial Intelligence) as another HVS of mine because that is the future.
