Any military operation that has been expected for months usually fails because the opponent has had plenty of time to plan a defence. Most successful operations are surprise operations, but not all surprise attacks work against a prepared opponent.

Expected attacks can work if there's overwhelming force. An example is #DesertStorm.

Example of successful surprise operations: #PearlHarbor, The #Incheon Landings in the #KoreanWar, #OperationUranus at #Stalingrad in October 1942 that encircled the #German #SixthArmy.

An example of a failed attack because there was no surprise in it was #OperationCitadel at the #BattleofKursk in June 1943. The expected line of attack was obvious to everyone because of the disposition of troops.

#Whatwerethedesignersthinking when they put the radars for Trophy APS on the front, on top of the main armor. Now, I love #Leopard2, IMO it is the best tank in service today. #Germans did nothing wrong, except these radars. #εpsilon Image
The frontal 60 degree arc is said to be most suceptible for enemy hits and the #Germans placed the critical radars on the front armor. Makes no sense at all. Look at #Americans on their #M1Abrams. The radar is off to the sides. It is still exposed though. Image
The #Israeli #Merkava has its #Trophy pointed more outwards but again away from the primary frontal protection. Its the #Germans who have a pretty bad design for what is a safety critical system in combat and will only gain importance. Image

Russo-Ukrainian War: The World Blood Pump

Gradually, and then Suddenly

by @witte_sergei

#NATORussiawar #Ukraine
Since #Russia’s surprise decision to voluntarily withdraw from west bank #Kherson in the first week of November, there has been little in the way of dramatic changes to the frontlines in #Ukraine.

In part, this reflects the predictable late autumn weather in Eastern Europe, which leaves battlefields waterlogged and clogged with mud and greatly inhibits mobility.

(1/23) This thread is mainly addressed to my #German followers, but it could also be interesting for those who always wanted to know how Germany could become the most culturally leftist country on the European continent. Accordingly, this thread is a #political #commentary by me.
(2/23) It is about the historical personality of the first post-war chancellor, Konrad Adeneauer. I also would like to finally dispel a myth that still plagues German conservatives, by which I do not mean recationaries, but all those who do not want to destroy their own country.
(3/23) This myth is the myth of the "good old", #50s and #60s, #CDU (Christian Democratic Party) and the question of what role a post-war #Germany could have played if #Adenauer and his party had not made completely wrong decisions about essential political directions.

How much is #Ukraine similar to #Syria?

Back in 2016. power of Bashar Al-#Assad was on his last legs. Insurgents took over the almost entire country, leaving him with roughly 15% of land under government control.

by Slavyangrad
All big cities were lost or heavily contested. The enemy was as close as two kilometers to the center of #Damascus.

#Syria #ukraine
Then #Russians came. Slowly but methodically, they started to bombard insurgents, which we can call a conglomerate of various ideological and interest groups, including designated terrorists such as Jabhat Al Nusra and #ISIS.

If we had the Internet during the Battle of the Bulge (aka the Ardennes Offensive)...

▪️Maps of #Germany's success would be shared by both sides, though there'd be no logical explanation as to what would follow next;

▪️Images of knocked out US/allied equipment with #Germans moving onward would flood the web;
▪️Panic would spread across allied forces who would question themselves despite an abundance of men, machines, and a massive industrial base, as well as having success everywhere else;
▪️Ultimately, #Germany would still be suffering from a lack of manpower, equipment, and ammunition - it would still be losing the war despite success during a single battle - and failure would begin to accelerate because of the vast resources concentrated ...

Some observers may conclude from current Ukrainian military advances that #Ukraine does not need that many weapons any more. Victory for Kyiv looks more & more possible. Seemingly, the rationale for heavily arming Ukraine is weakening in view of Kyiv's impressive recent gains. /1
However, Ukraine precarious location in a geopolitical grey zone will not change any time soon. As long as Ukraine is neither a NATO nor a full EU member, the country will have to take care of its security itself. Russia may either continue now or resume later its aggression. /2
An as heavy, comprehensive and modern as possible arming of #Ukraine has thus not only a tactical dimension. It is not only necessary for a successful completion of the current counter-offensive, and eventual achievement of a peace deal with Moscow that is acceptable to Kyiv. /3

Noji could have been registered for the "Volksliste" in the 1930s as he had 🇩🇪 roots, but he strictly refused, and joined the 🇵🇱 resistance when #WWII broke out.
He was arrested on 18 Sep'40 and was initially kept at #Pawiak. After a year, he was transported to @auschwitz, where in Feb'43, in death block 11, he was shot in the neck for allegedly smuggling a letter. He was posthumously awarded the Cross of Valor.

A quick follow up on dangers of German exceptionalism & 🇩🇪's insular political culture arising
from yesterday's thread on #Germany's approach to #Ukraine (& some great responses to it) in the context of #Emma #offenerbrief (open letter to Olaf Scholz)
1. Many ppl claim '#Germans have been told for 70 years that nothing but diplomacy & non-military solutions are acceptable' They're wrong but prove the 🇩🇪insularity point.
This was the message INSIDE #Germany for (some) understandable reasons. But OUTSIDE it was very different:
#Germany has been warned by allies (in #CEE, #US, #UK) for years about #Russia
& about Cheap-riding in #NATO.

But, as (e.g.) this piece shows,🇩🇪ignored those warnings & went its own way on defence, on🇷🇺& ended up trampling #CEE & #Ukraine's agency…

On 23Dec.1947,Stalin signed a resolution by the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the resettlement of Azerbaijani kolkhoz members and other Azerbaijanis from the Armenian SSR to the lowlands of the Kur & Araz rivers.On 10Mar.1948,a further resolution on resettlement was signed.
Textual study of the #resolutions by the Council of Ministers of the #USSR shows that they had complete disregard for #human and civil #rights. #Azerbaijanis were removed, not from certain territories, as stated, but from the whole of #Armenia.
It becomes clear that the aim was to oust all #Azerbaijanis from #Armenia. According to the last, 11th, Article of the #resolution dated 23 December 1947, it was intended to settle foreign #Armenians in Armenia in place of the deported #Azerbaijanis.

3. We want to keep it that way. Ukraine will have no choice but to stay behind the Himalayas while we will continue living in our old home, the #EU-#NATO continent. Such is life... Sure, we have lots of interest, empathy, and respect for #Ukrainians.

I am watching a BBC-2 documentary on #Reinhard #Heydrich the #SS Soldier, who tortured many across Eastern Europe, especially, enslaved the innocent people of #Czechoslovakia during the second world war.
Let history not allow such men to exist again!
And, let me add that when I meet #Germans today and see the difference from what I have been told about them by my grandparents, compared to how they have evolved during the postwar years, the transformation is truly remarkable.
The same can be said about the #Japanese people.
Germans and Japanese have learned from their past mistakes!
I hope other warring nations and tribes will follow in their footsteps.
No nation can survive in longevity if its economy falters, politics remains in disarray, and the society crumbles under conflicting narratives.

The feeling of being held up is apparently present in many, they feel attacked. It is quite paradoxical: Although in surveys almost 90 percent say that belonging to #Germany is the knowledge of the history of National Socialism. Nevertheless, especially the #youth find today:
