So the question is, what is in the water that makes people so sensitive to perceived conspiracies? Maybe it first began when Larry Summers caused someine to faint when he asked about women in STEM. To hear tell there are now racists and Nazis everywhere.
The woke answer is that Nazis were always everywhere. They were previously just hiding and are now emerging under the encouragement of Trump. This implies the existence of a kind of intractable white malevolence that not even decades of liberal culture can eradicate.
Hillary's defeat, Brexit etc -- the fragility of the liberal project -- are seen as proof that "the plague never dies" and that it can resist any fumigation, indoctrination or persuasion. They are like those characters in monster movies shooting Dracula without effect.
The alternative explanation is that there were serious defects in the liberal project and the pushback is due to those defects and not to some racist virus.
