ERG leaks “secret high-tech plan” to create invisible border in Ireland...that needs number plate cameras and tracking devices.

Am told this was “at the bottom” of a stack of the ropiest tech proposals being hawked round by PRs...

No doubt the ERG thinks it was cleverly hidden away by evil mandarins who didn’t want to make it work...which it won’t. /2
I had a go at explaining why here earlier tonight.

Shorter: leave aside the cameras, these schemes only work if Everyone co-operates. Tracking a van doesn’t tell you what’s IN the van. Doh! /4

Leave aside gangs and smugglers, do we think white van man in the Irish borderlands is going to submit to trackers in his van and spot inspections?

Do we really think that if worked someone in Whitehall, Dublin or Brussels might have spotted it??/5
It kind of speaks for itself that we are now onto the Rwandan model?!

So 57 Brexiteers abstained tonight, which - if you're a mad optimist - maybe creates space to ditch the Malthouse nonsense.

@theresa_may There is talk of EU 'concession' - something that Cox says convinces him backstop is temporary - but ask yourself why the EU thinks that gets the deal done? Because it pretty clearly wont. /2
@theresa_may Then ask your self why the EU would ask @campaignforleo to make a politically painful concession (having backed him to the hilt) if it doesn't do the job. That way they still haven't got a deal, and they've asked Irish to take one for the team for nothing. /3

It means that haulage company may decide to invest heavily in the Republic to continue to serve its customers - which means some of their 200 employees in the North are likely to lose their jobs. They will also pay more of their taxes in Dublin, not to the Exchequer in London./3

Fascinating poll which reveals 66% of Leave Voters are uninterested in exactly how we leave the EU, they just want to leave. This brings into question - exactly *what* are we achieving pushing for Brexit?

2) the main point here is that only 1/6 of the country, at most, actually care whether we leave on WTO terms or Norway+Single Market or anything in between. The rest either want to Remain or are uninterested in the details of leaving. This leads to several conclusions
3) Firstly, no-one, least of all Rees-Mogg & the ERG, speaks for everyone or even a majority of Leavers.

When various right wing commentators say "give us the #Brexit we voted for" or push for no deal, they speak for almost no-one but themselves

1. There's a subtle shift in tone from the ultras this morning who are now pushing for a Canada+ agreement. That + is going to have to do a lot of work because we'd still be subject to third country controls thus having a similarly damaging effect to no deal #Brexit.
2. Again the Brexiters are ducking the issue that to have frictionless trade you need full regulatory harmonisation. If we don't have that then Mrs May will have to sign the NI backstop. Chequers is an attempt to fudge this question but it is at least a nod to reality.
3. Mrs May has attempted to bridge the unbridgeable divide. Chequers is an attempt at regulatory alignment while maintaining a level of regulatory sovereignty - which is tolerable but not to the EU. They won't go for it.
