In response, @Ali makes a number of good points - iron sharpens iron, and a small group of savvy, like-minded people can make each other better and have a bigger impact working together
Also - small groups have an easier time maintaining intra-group trust and friendship

Less drama, lower maintenance than bigger groups, more trust, more genuine friendship
High-value people are clique-y because more "close friends" = more demands on your time
