Tomorrow in Law & Public Policy, I'm teaching on Commerce Clause & civil rights so I get to tell my favorite anecdote, about Moreton Rolleston (owned Heart of Atlanta Motel, argued at SCOTUS that CRA 1964 was unconstitutional incl. violating his 13th Amdt. rights) & Tyler Perry.
Within hours of LBJ signing the CRA, Rolleston rushed to the district court to challenge the Act and when it was closed, he went to the home of the chief clerk to file his complaint challenging the CRA's constitutionality, saying he hadn't & wouldn't integrate his motel.
Rolleston argued his case before the Supreme Court, and lost (the 13th Amdt argument was... bold). Many years later, Rollseton's house was seized amid legal malpractice issues. And the house was sold to none other than Tyler Perry (who sought to demolish it & build a new home).
So, the man so determined not to let people of color rent rooms in his motel that he argued his case at the Supreme Court found himself in the position of his home being sold to a person of color. Not too surprisingly, Rolleston wasn't thrilled about this development.
Rolleston then sued Tyler Perry, claiming that he was the true owner of the property. And his aggressive litigation over this property, objecting to Perry's purchase, resulted in Rolleston being disbarred at age 89. Karma.
