NEW: The federal government’s responsibility to provide online information in languages other than English is poorly defined at best. Check out our latest post from @j0ncampbell and @SJohn_elections for a quick explainer of the topic: 1/ sunlightfoundation.com/2019/02/14/exp…
An executive order from 2000 lays out the basic requirements of “meaningful access” to resources for people who aren’t fluent in English. But our initial review of major federal sites found that agencies have taken a huge range of approaches to meeting the needs of these users 2/
Some federal sites provide translation of virtually all of their content, others only of a few key webpages. A few offer no apparent translation of website materials at all, just language assistance by phone. 3/
According to @marayoudelman of @NHeLP_org, ideally all government materials found online would be translated. But meeting the needs of LEP individuals currently means striking a balance between providing access to the most important resources and agency capacity. 4/
As we learn more, we hope we’ll be able to offer a fuller assessment of the state of language accommodation on the federal Web. 5/5 sunlightfoundation.com/2019/02/14/exp…
