/ Thread on my piece yesterday regarding Venezuela. The reason I've been tweeting a lot about it and writing on it is because it's easy to let emotions about Maduro or socialism cloud the real picture, and the real story is plain and simple geopolitical ambitions.
/ Russia and China are very involved in Venezuela. China's financing the nation to the tune of over $40 billion. Venezuela has the largest proved oil reserves in the world. If Maduro is tossed out in favor of a U.S. puppet, China's suddenly in a tricky situation. Leverage gone.
/ China consumes a lot of oil and doesn't produce that much. Its relationship with Venezuela is certainly much about natural resources. So the move by the U.S. is partly driven by taking out a key Chinese ally in the Western Hemisphere and making it a client state of USA.
/ It must be seen as part of the growing tensions between the U.S. and China. Tensions that I expect to only grow in the years ahead as the U.S. empire attempts to hold on to a uni-polar order, while much of the rest of the world accepts a multi-polar world as inevitable.
/ Long story short, China and Russia have basically been saying to U.S., look this isn't 1995. The world's changed. We have interests, you have interests, but we aren't going to be bossed around anymore, those days are over. Some in the U.S. get this, others refuse to accept it.
/ Venezuela is not in the Middle East, and the emotions that come with a socialist county in the Western Hemisphere with ties to countries abroad run deep. Policy of the hemisphere as U.S. backyard goes back to the Monroe Doctrine (1823). So that's the sales pitch.
/ The Trump administration is trying to get the public to see this on emotion and leave logic behind. People are pretty skeptical about Middle East stuff at this point, so the pivot here was savvy. Scream socialism, scream about helping the people and democracy, you know...
/ The typical sales pitch where our government intentionally infantilizes the conversation with garbage platitudes. Whether you support what Trump did or not, it is imperative we have this conversation as adults. What's actually going on?
/ If you lower yourself to pretending this about fighting socialism or a dictator or brining freedom and democracy, you're merely helping to bring this conversation to the level of little children who can't talk about reality.
/ Which, by the way, is a HUGE problem when it comes to almost all issues. We talk about them in partisan terms that please us, leaving complexity at the door and thus nothing happens and the people who really call the shots have us divided on stupidities while they plunder.
/ So this is much bigger than Venezuela. It's about recognizing how we're so easily duped into infantile/stupid talking points that have nothing to do with reality. The reality with Venezuela is that this is just geopolitical maneuvering. There's nothing else going on.
/ It's about what it's always been about: Power and money. So let's have a debate, but let's have a debate based on reality, not slogans like "freedom and democracy," which imperial powers have never cared about and never will.
