I am very saddened that seven MPs have felt the need to leave Labour. As I have warned for months, I am concerned this split could keep Labour out of power for a generation. I hope we can reflect on this moment and don’t just knee jerk condemn these MPs.

I continue to believe that the Labour Party is the most powerful vehicle for progressive change in this country. However this is a moment for deep pause and reflection. We have been far too slow to tackle anti-Semitism in our party. We have failed to oppose Brexit.
Moving forward I hope we can contain this split by reaching out across the political spectrum in the Labour movement. Providing a platform for the likes of Tony Benn to Alan Milburn, our party has always succeeded as a broad and inclusive church.

How many more young lives have to be taken before the PM takes this surge in violent crime seriously? How many teenagers need to be stabbed? How many have to be shot?
The main causes of violent crime have been the same for at least 200 years. Social deprivation, exclusion and poverty push people into gangs and crime. London's housing crisis (prices have quadrupled in 20 years) and vast inequality are driving this surge.

It's simply not true to say I did not respond: we had two meetings in my office. I had hoped - and still hope - your coverage would improve but Stacey's post was more of the same tried tropes. As I told you before, I'm not prepared to become part of a PR exercise.
It’s not about me making a nice film, but about you giving some of your very privileged platform on the BBC to the hundreds of African comedians, filmmakers, celebrities and everyday people who live on the continent.
My job as a politician is to raise the issue. The people of Africa do not need a British politician to make a film. I want African people to speak for themselves, not UK celebs acting as tour guides.

The world does not need any more white saviours. As I've said before, this just perpetuates tired and unhelpful stereotypes. Let's instead promote voices from across the continent of Africa and have serious debate.

Hi @StaceyDooley. This isn't personal and I don't question your good motives. My problem with British celebrities being flown out by Comic Relief to make these films is that it sends a distorted image of Africa which perpetuates an old idea from the colonial era.
Comic Relief has a huge platform and privilege and it is the first and major way children learn about Africa. If they only show Africans as helpless victims to be pitied, children miss the broader picture of huge progress in Africa. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

We saw a complete absence to accept any ownership or accountability for the state we are in. No compassion was shown, no empathy, no understanding. No Leadership.

We find that really disappointing. Looking to Luciana Berger, Mike Gapes, Ian Austin, Joan Ryan it is clear....
They never felt they would ever leave Labour, they didn't want to, they were at the end of their emotional tether. They felt bullied, harassed, outraged at what they have seen and experienced.

Leadership in effect said you're wrong about how you feel, or it's irrelevant.....

To become the largest party, Labour needs to gain around 30 seats. It so happens that there are 29 seats where Labour is in 2nd place less than 3 pts behind the incumbent. 21 are held by the #CONSERVATIVES, 7 by the SNP, 1 by #plaidcymru. /2
To get a working majority, Labour needs to gain 61 seats given Sinn Fein don't take their seats. It so happens there are 62 seats where Labour is in 2nd place less than 7 pts behind the incumbent. 45 are held by the Conservatives, 16 by the SNP, 1 by Plaid Cymru /3

If we leave with no deal, or a bad deal (and there can be no deal better than the one we have now), people will suffer, lose jobs, people struggling to get by now will go under. Any GE will see the tories ousted and Corbyn in charge - but that’s the worst thing that can happen 1/
Whoever is in charge post-Brexit is taking a hugely poisoned chalice, a lose/lose situation. Companies leaving, a currency falling, a population suffering.
That population will oust them at the first opportunity and keep them out of power for a generation. 2/
So Labour now have w couple of choices. Openly advocate a people’s vote whilst simultaneously campaigning for a GE.
If we get a GE we can then stop Brexit and get a labour led nation within the EU, or fail to get a GE but ensure that the tories own Brexit 3/

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."
