Today we’d like to tell you about fore-edge painting...

#Foreedgery
Which is a technique for decorating a book's fore-edge (the edge opposite a book's spine).

#Foreedgery
There are several types of fore-edge painting, including painting directly onto the fore-edge, but what we’ll look at is the ‘fanned’ technique of fore-edge painting.

#Foreedgery
In this technique the fore-edge of a book is slightly fanned out and then secured while a painted view is applied. As you might imagine, this is precise, delicate work.

#Foreedgery
After the painting is completed the edges of the book are then squared up and gilded so that the painting remains concealed (and protected) by the closed book. But when the book is fanned again, the painting *magically* re-appears 🤓

We’ll show you what we mean with this lovely example from 1830. The fore-edge painting depicts @edinburghcastle as viewed from the Grassmarket...

#Foreedgery
This is from the book ‘M. Tullii Ciceronis opera.’ (1830) shelfmark > RB.s.2768 – which contains interpretation and criticisim of Cicero’s speeches.

So… do you want to see another one? 🤓

#Foreedgery
Ok then 👍 - this fore-edge painting shows @AbbotsfordScott. It’s from ‘Memoirs of the life of Sir Walter Scott’ (1845) shelfmark > F.4.d.19

Wow - this interest in #foreedgery is fab to see!
Ok, now for our final example...

#Foreedgery
Our final fore-edge painting shows a view of #Edinburgh from Calton Hill. It’s from ‘The remains of Henry Kirke White: consisting of poems, essays, & letters; with an original biography of the author’ (1825). Shelfmark > F.4.d.9

PPS - in case you're interested, there are still #foreedgery artists working in the UK today - such as Martin Frost (foredgefrost.co.uk) and Clare Brooksbank (clarebrooksbank.co.uk/index.php/cate…) - both websites are worth viewing if nothing else.
PPPS - we spotted this video by @DannyDutch showing lots more examples of #Foreedgery >
