Cisco forecasts (i.e., guesses) mobile traffic will be at ~annual run rate of a zettabyte [one trillion gigabytes] by 2022 or 20 percent of global IP traffic 113 times more than all global mobile traffic generated in 2012. newsroom.cisco.com/press-release-… That's real productivity.
The price of sending a mobile gigabyte might fall to 50 cents or even one cent in five years. Since prices will drop there will be little measured impact on GDP despite innovation. Profit margins remain low and service providers will look up the stack at applications and SaaS.
Lots of innovation increases efficiency and output without increasing profits. This baffles many people including economists and journalists. They ask: "Doesn't innovation always result in more profit/revenue?" Heck no. Sometimes nothing sticks to your ribs as a business owner.
