A Sunday morning thread:

I was talking to a friend who's a white, evangelical Christian. "I'm worried you've become bitter and wrathful, esp about the church," he said.

I am angry, I said.

But it's not bitterness, it's the anger of hurt & betrayal, anger against injustice.
See, I *believed* Christians when they said life mattered. I took them at their word.

I *believed* white Christians when they said they cared about racial justice.

When they said they cared about the Other, I thought they did.
Because I care.

I care that we're traumatizing a generation of immigrant kids. I care that we're sending refugees - many of whom lost everything because of policies and interventions from our government - back home to likely death.
I care that we're gunning down black people, that we're sending them to prison at higher rates than they deserve, that we're destroying communities.

I care that women are raped by the men they trust.

I care if people see me and people who look like me as fully human.
Jesus cared too. And he also got angry.

He literally flipped tables. He cursed at the religious elite. He had no patience for church corruption either.
But then he was also a refugee.

And a poor member of an oppressed people.

The American church is neither.
