Brexit is not happening in a vacuum. It's why last week's DCMS report was so important. Anti-semitism is on the rise everywhere. And it's been helped & facilitated by the tech platforms. Labour's problem with anti-semitism is downstream. We must look at the bigger picture
This is really worth reading. The row in the Labour Party is one thing. But the sources of information that are fuelling this are the real threat. And our best chance of confronting it last week was totally eclipsed by our eternally parochial politics

And this is why @jeremycorbyn is so woefully not up to the task. He can't even see the problem. The Labour movement should be all over the consolidation of power by the tech platforms. But he's never made a single statement on it. Shows zero understanding of issues
Reminder of where @observeruk's whole Cambridge Analytica investigation began. These are bigger currents. Bigger issues. What is happening in Britain has to be understood as part of what is happening globally.

I think I may have reached my moment of total despair. The full video is all over YouTube. All over Facebook. Look, a single upload on FB - 23,000 views in 1 hour. And 1000s out there. We just cannot let Facebook & Google continue to operate beyond the law. It's insane
The killer was steeped in internet culture. He intended this video to go viral to inspire others. Just as he was inspired by Breivik. And it has. Facebook & Google broadcasting it right now to millions. That is not algos gone bad. It's a human decision

And yes, @OwenJones84 & @afneil this is *exactly* the same story as the Brexit crimes you insist on ignoring. It's big tech facilitating the breaking of national laws & being wholly unaccountable to our parliament. The idea it doesn't matter is ridiculous & terrifying

Last week @arron_banks & @andywigmore went to Veneto, the heartland of Italy's Lega Nord. Today, the plan is revealed. The fascists have agreed to help Britain exit without a deal. Salvini will block an extension of article 50. We're fucked.

Ok. Serious question. A lot of people are, I'm sure, fed up with me & others banging on & on about Brexit crimes & foreign interference. While almost every other British news org ignores it. Almost all politicians. Almost all political journalists. So...what if it is Watergate?
Theresa May is clearly covering something up here. What? What will we find out in 2, 5, 10 years' time?
Clarification! This wasn't a fishing-for-support sort of a tweet (though thank you). It was a 'how can we we reframe this story so that people understand we are witnessing - and indeed participating in - a political cover-up of potentially historic proportions'. Thoughts? Ideas?

While we've all been distracted by the big #Brexit votes in the Commons - some really interesting happenings in the Lords on the Trade Bill 1/
Last week, peers amended it to to say parliament (*both Houses*) must approve a negotiating mandate & approve a final trade deal before ratification

Also requires approval of mandate/deal by a designated select committees & consultation with the devolved administrations 2/
There have also been amdts which try and address the UK's negotiating objectives with the EU (e.g. customs union, Northern Ireland border, mobility framework), but I'll leave my excellent colleague @awstojanovic to explain what those mean... 3/

1) I haven't believed in "overturning" the #Brexit vote for legal reasons, could be skewed as the "Elites cancelling Brexit"

But the fact remains, the courts just agreed that it wasn't a proper, "legal" vote
If it *had* been, it would have been cancelled for illegal spending
2) so when @JohnMannMP @CarolineFlintMP and other Labour MPs attack Labour's new position they are defending an essentially illegal & corrupt vote that only avoided being cancelled for massive Leave overspending & collusion *by a technicality*
@JohnMannMP @CarolineFlintMP 3) just consider that
Parliamentarians, defenders of our democracy, are saying we must respect a vote which by any measure would have been cancelled *IF* they and other MPs had actually set it up properly as a legally binding vote

First of all, the most obvious thing: Corbyn did this move not only because of a new Brexit strategy but above all because of a party strategy: the hemorrhage of moderate or outraged MPs had to be stopped somehow. The Independent group surely was concerning him. We’ll see.
Sure this move won’t stop the MPs shocked by the accusations of antisemitism, but it might have a good impact on the europhile ones. The new mantra is clear: until the choice is between May’s deal and No Deal, the new Labour weapon is a new, 2nd referendum.

I'm not a fan of Corbyn, but I'm going to try to keep this fair

It's fair to say the campaign for a people's vote is a major force for this week's conference
100s of motions from the CLPs
Corbyn said he'd respect conference
2) Now, obviously politics is complex however Corbyn did say he came into the Leadership to empower the members - yes, Blair & other leaders probably played dodgy tricks in these "compositing" events but Corbyn specifically said he would be different & far more democratic
3) Spreading democracy outwards is a core belief of Corbyn, into CLPs, communities, businesses, everywhere.

Obviously as well, going for a #PeoplesVote carries some risk for the Labour party, in terms of how the press might react.

But this shouldn't, in the end, matter

Here are some of the key findings from the report in slide form.
First an overview of the study itself:
Rich qualitative data (online survey & focus groups) gathered across the Central Border Region. Detailed examples & viewpoints heard from people on both sides of #border.

Respondents to the survey came from across the 8 local authority areas of the Central Border Region, moreorless equally from both sides of the border. 50/50 male/female. 80% 31-65 yrs.
There were far fewer Leave-voting respondents so they got extra attention in our analysis.
