"A Facebook spokesperson told CNN in a statement on Monday that the company was working on making pages on its platform more transparent."

THREAD...

(1/)
FB has started to give users more info on pages, but you have to know where to look for it. (Recall: most users only interact with their newsfeeds and rarely wander off it.) This info is buried just barely "above the fold" on a page's TL & requires a click on "about." (2/)
Here's an example from my October @BuzzFeedNews story on a network of homegrown astroturfing accounts promoting a fringe candidate in the MA Senate election.

They used a page with thousands of followers that had undergone a series of name changes in their scheme. (3/)
This is a series of name changes that you might think would trigger some sort of cautionary AI around this stuff. But nope. I had to notice it for the page to get taken down. Story here:

Making page ownership, name changes, connected accounts more easily accessible to users (perhaps with a hover feature, like Twitter profiles) would give important context for people who want to be more careful about the information they share online. (5/)
Frankly, on the scale of challenges facing social media companies right now, these are among the easiest to meet, and I find it frustrating that it hasn't been done yet. (6/6)
