Nice backbencher @AlbertoCostaMP has been given the boot for putting down an amendment calling on the PM to seek a separate treaty on EU citizens' rights as an insurance against no-deal.

It's widely backed by all sides, from Jacob Rees Mogg to Caroline Lucas

Costa's proposal does not breach collective responsibility (although everyone will assume that the PM is opposed to it now)

He was handed the silver revolver because PPSs (junior minister aides) aren't supposed to put down amendments to Government Bills.

Here's why it is terrible politics:

Mrs May herself traipsed around the EU in 2016 asking for a separate deal on citizen rights. She was shown the door by Merkel & Co who refused to negotiate until A50 was triggered.

But now she gives the impression of opposing those rights
