Missed the #FederalPrivacyBill hearing in Senate committee yesterday because of Cohen but finally read @hartzog’s opening statement and you should too. commerce.senate.gov/public/_cache/…
A crucial tension is a dire necessity to inhibit the data economy to protect human rights vs. the Trump administration’s effort to accelerate unfettered development of AI to race against China, a state that readily deploys it for social control.
Apparently and unsurprisingly, autonomous vehicles are racist beasts. Without fundamental human rights enshrined as defensible civil rights, humanity stands on a precipice of losing its dignity and actual autonomy to surveillance capitalism & technocracy.
As @hartzog explained in his statement to Senate Commerce committee yesterday (see above), the Notice & Choice privacy regime is an utter failure and must be scrapped in favor of a new model. Even when you try to “opt-out” you can’t. It’s all just a farce. wsj.com/articles/faceb…
The US tech and ad industry was greedy and regulators deferential so the standard for a single, simple, persistent Opt-Out was proposed but never adopted, called Do Not Track. But will EU data protection laws cause industry to revisit and resuscitate it?
