This week, actor #LukePerry passed away after experiencing what has been described in the media as a "massive #stroke." Although information as to the specifics of his stroke are currently - and may always be - few, his death has reignited the national stroke conversation.
Stroke is not a monolith. The appearance of a stroke will differ from person to person, age to age, gender to gender. Strokes present themselves differently based on location in the brain, the health of the person, and current medical issues.
Even our "Act F.A.S.T." guidelines are only a starting point as many people never exhibit slurred speech, facial drooping or paralysis. Instead, they may have a headache, nausea, or simply feel that something is just "not right."
And it's that "not right" feeling that I keep coming back to. In the many many interviews I've conducted with stroke survivors, almost all of them mention a sense of feeling "not right." Or, their loved ones notice that something seems "off" about the other person.
These signs of stroke, from Act F.A.S.T. all the way to "Nothing hurts, but everything seems 'off'" deserve to be taken seriously. If you or a loved one is exhibiting any of these signs, it's time to call 9-1-1.
Immediate medical intervention can greatly reduce the recovery time from a stroke or even save a life.
If you believe you or a loved one is having a stroke, even if it's just a possibility, please call 9-1-1. Time loss is brain loss.
Luke Perry was young, but stroke can happen to people of any age, with no warning, under any circumstance. Please take the warnings seriously.
