In 2015, a UNHCR report on the refugee crisis found that, "Britain’s right-wing media was uniquely aggressive in its campaigns against refugees and migrants."

In the past 5 years, not much has changed.

Today's example from the Mail Online blames far-right terror attacks in Germany on the so called 'migrant crisis' of 2015, when Angela Merkel opened the borders to migrants crossing the Mediterranean. 2/7

The article also mentions "headline-grabbing stories of sexual assaults, notably on New Year's Eve 2015/16 when more than 1,000 women in 12 cities including Cologne claimed to have been sexually assaulted, mostly by immigrants." 3/7

A thread by @SwalihaAsiya on negative stereotyping of Muslim characters by Indian or International shows.

The entertainment industry owes the #Muslims of the world more than an apology.

#MediaBias
#DispellingMythsOnIslam
#NoToIslamophobia
The 'Muslim' shown on TV is never a realistic reflection of the actual Muslim.
He/She is either painted in black or white, with either the character honing negative ISIS-kinda extremism or a completely watered down version of a Hollywood Muslim, who parties and drinks etc.
Where are the real caricatures of a Muslim being showcased on TV?

It's either the Taliban or al-Qaida oriented terrorism spreading, suicide bombing version all over International TV or the Hollywood Muslim who has discarded the Muslim identity as if it were a cancerous malady.

A thread about #SBC19 and media.

For many years of my early career I edited media (radio) or provided oversight to other editors. I’ve long thought there was a need for an ethical framework for media editors b/c of the technological power we have at our fingertips.
I began thinking this years ago when I witnessed a credible religion journalist interview 2 prominent Southern Baptist brothers on different sides of an issue. The interviews were separate then edited together with narration.
The final cut of the interview depicted a far greater divide than there actually was between the subjects. The report inflamed the already tense conversation. But that was a secular media corp reporting on Baptist life. Little surprise they would get it wrong.

1/ If we want a Labour Government 🌹 avoid Twitter Brutality:

1. Never tweet when angry
2. Those who loathe #Corbyn & seek his demise will never be persuaded otherwise. So unless armed with facts, stats or a witty satirical retort, ignore them.

THREAD (PART 3 of 4): Why you shouldn’t trust @QuilliamOrg ‘s report on #groominggangs & the claim that 84% of “grooming gang offenders” are Asian. An evidence-based critique. 1/
It ignores well-known biases in crime data, such as whether victims disclose (‘self-selection bias’), whether reports are investigated/prosecuted (‘institutional bias’) & whether convictions make the news (‘media bias’) 2/
If using news sources, it's a big mistake to overlook #mediabias – especially as coverage of “grooming gangs” has been very racialised. Crimes involving sex, children & race ‘sell' & stories fitting an established narrative tend to get more coverage. (bit.ly/2q7WLKq) 3/
