A bit of a myth has developed that Vote Leave didn't present any plan for Brexit before the referendum. In fact they did, but it wasn't very realistic. (1/x)
Michael Gove gave speeches in which he said we wouldn't need to use Article 50 and could just repeal the European Communities Act without it affecting our trade. (2/x)
The Vote Leave approach was judged to be unworkable at the time by people such as @ProfKAArmstrong of the University of Cambridge who produced this paper. (3/x)

Norman Lamont gets mugged by reality (and Mark Carney) on GATT Article 24 and the idea of mutual free trade under No Deal.
A reminder that before the referendum, Lamont thought we'd get a better deal than single market membership... telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/1…
"If you’re just making a fan chart of all the different scenarios, even one that has some resemblance to the present situation might be one worth documenting."

Lamont is basically saying, "Even if unicorns don't exist, it might be nice to show a 🦄 on the fan chart anyway."

Back in the mid-90s, when Euroscepticism first started to take over the Tory party, Bill Cash introduced an EU referendum bill in parliament but he stressed it "was not about whether the UK should be in or out". (2/x)
At the time, Michael Gove was a newspaper columnist and used Bill Cash's referendum bill as an opportunity to float the idea of a full withdrawal from the EU in an article subtitled "British withdrawal from the EU need not be suicidal". (3/x)

1. So I *could* do another thread on why the EEA is the best option but then I'll get a torrent of whining from ultra #Brexit idiots. So let's just cut to the chase. Yes, the EEA is suboptimal. Tough...
2. Leavers have whinged about every single alternative suggestion - suggestions which have been widely panned not only by leavers but also by Brussels. That's because these convoluted workarounds are trying to deliver the impossible.
3. The fact leavers can't bring themselves to admit is that regulatory harmonisation is a fact of life if you want frictionless trade. There is no cake and eat it option and the EU will make no special exceptions for the UK. Why should it?

Look at her position today, compared to what was promised by Vote Leave & it's leaders, they're poles apart
2) Back then Vote Leave promised "exact same benefits", £350 M & "German car makers will force a deal".
It was a consequence free, risk free, cost free #Brexit
It was also a massive, cynical, stupid lie which people like Philips bought into
3) Compare those sunlit uplands to Philips, Mogg, Davis today - "we should be prepared to walk away and go WTO, and take any consequent pain, that's what we voted for"
*Who* voted for this? When was WTO even discussed by Vote Leave?
What happened to "exact same benefits"?

1. The greatest insult to Britain is the promotion of the narrative that any of Vote Leave's activities had any bearing on the result whatsoever. It was probably the most ineffectual campaign in the history of British campaigning. VL had no idea how to run a #Brexit campaign.
2. In the run up to the vote the VL twitter feed was photos of mostly white, mostly middle class 19 year old boys in red t-shirts manning deserted stalls in the Home Counties which had zero online impact.
3. Of the street level activism, no not roll-up smoking, flat cap wearing elderly Yorkshireman on a rainy Wednesday in Castleford street is going to have his mind changed by a clean shaven Toryboy bussed in from London.

1. The impossibility of meaningful treaty reform. We cannot edit the supranationalist DNA of the EU
2. The exclusion of the public from decisions relating to further integration. See Treaty of Lisbon.
3. The way in which the EU will seek homogenisation and integration for its own sake and for that of EU ideology over practical necessity.

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM
