Melanie Philips in usual form talking about the betrayal of Brexit voters. And it's true, they were betrayed - by Brexit leaders

Look at her position today, compared to what was promised by Vote Leave & it's leaders, they're poles apart

2) Back then Vote Leave promised "exact same benefits", £350 M & "German car makers will force a deal".
It was a consequence free, risk free, cost free #Brexit
It was also a massive, cynical, stupid lie which people like Philips bought into

3) Compare those sunlit uplands to Philips, Mogg, Davis today - "we should be prepared to walk away and go WTO, and take any consequent pain, that's what we voted for"
*Who* voted for this? When was WTO even discussed by Vote Leave?
What happened to "exact same benefits"?

4) how many Voters, Leave or Remain, fully understand what it means to trade on WTO? I certainly don't. All I do know is no country *in the world* has done what Philips is proposing. So could have voted for it? And how many really voted for #Brexit at any cost? 30%? 20%?

5) when you cut through all the bluff & bluster of Philips & other Brexit leaders the "plan" came down to one idea - 1 country would bully 27 others into bending to its will, using a catastrophic "no deal" as a threat.
There was nothing else, no other great #Brexit plan

6) it is supremely ironic that those complaining about the UK capitulating on #Brexit today fully expected 27 other sovereign nations to capitulate, because we're Britain & they're only Foriners or something.

Well, they aren't going to, and Brexiters are left with nothing else

7) yes there's a certain glamour in taking to the high seas on WTO, and if you are rich or complacent you have the luxury of taking that gamble on other people's behalf

But people didn't vote for that. They voted for consequence free #Brexit, not some mad gamble

8) there's no majority for what Philips is proposing, and never would be, and for all their bleating on democracy it is grossly undemocratic to force the country into a costly & uncertain path because of Vote Leave's foolish & reckless miscalculation

9) Brexit voters were betrayed - by their own leaders. They were promised something that could never happen,because the only other options would never have gained a majority.
We're all paying the price of that betrayal
