I was about to tweet a thread on how I "process" a paper (basically a better, more recent run-down of my Paper Processing Protocol raulpacheco.org/2016/12/proces… but I found this thread which should give you an idea of my process, from printed source to CSED row to Mendeley entry)
This other thread also shows you how I "process" a paper, from printed source to Conceptual Synthesis Excel Dump (CSED) row
I downloaded and printed these 5 articles which I need for the papers I’m revising. It’s way way way past my bed time so I won’t be reading them. But I hate disorganized papers. So all I’ll do is staple and label them. I know I already have the files in Mendeley, clean reference
Because I know I'm already exhausted, WAY past my bed time, I need to leave everything ready for tomorrow morning, so I open my Bottled Water Conceptual Synthesis Excel Dump raulpacheco.org/2016/06/synthe… and my Mendeley. Leaving them open gives me the sequence of tasks for tomorrow:
(i.e. "Clean references in Mendeley of the 5 articles you've got to read this morning" and "Drop these 5 articles in your CSED". While I'll do an AIC/CSED combo, it's likely that one of these articles (or more) will need deeper reading. raulpacheco.org/2017/12/carvin…
If I find that an article is relevant enough to write a Synthetic Note raulpacheco.org/2017/05/writin… I'll do it as I drop key ideas in my CSED. If it is a REALLY important paper, I'll write a memorandum raulpacheco.org/2016/07/writin… or expan my Synthetic Note raulpacheco.org/2017/05/writin…
One additional hack and I am going to bed. I left on top of the pile the article I believe will be the most relevant for what I’m working on. This forces me to remember as I go through all of them and drop them in my CSED and clean their Mendeley reference </end thread>
This morning, I woke up, started my coffee, and checked my To-Do list as posted in my Everything Notebook. I knew I had to clean up references in Mendeley, and do a quick #AICCSED combo for the 5 articles I left besides my laptop last night. I already cleaned the references.
One note about Mendeley: I've had issues with synchronization before, they appeared to have been fixed, but two days ago I woke up to find that six papers whose references I already had cleaned had not been properly synchronized, so my clean references were gone. So now I check.
This adds time and it's a bit of a pain in the **** but I now open my Mendeley library (I use Chrome) and visually verify that yes, the reference that wasn't cleaned before is now cleaned. As you can tell from the screenshot from my Mendeley Desktop, there's one left to clean.
Coincidentally, the one paper whose reference I have to clean is one I did NOT print out, because it didn't have "bottled water" in the title. Well, I searched through the PDF and found lots of instances of BW discussed, so now I have to print it and read it. <facepalm>
Annoying issue: law review articles have different citation styles, so cleaning up references becomes a bit of an annoyance. I interpret it as best as I can, so sue me.
