Chelsea @xychelsea Manning has entered the United States Courthouse where a judge will decide whether to hold her in contempt for refusing to testify against Assange.

Reporter: "Is it possible that you aren't walking out those doors after this hearing?"

Chelsea: "Yes."

Ahead of the hearing, I asked Manning what she thinks of these hearings being conducted in secret (no press/public allowed in).

"I have a history of having to deal with secrecy and a lot of these sort of secret proceedings. They tend to favor the government," she tells me.

By the way, I’m publishing this stuff from a bench outside the courthouse, and it looks like I’m the only press who stayed. I plan to stay until Chelsea leaves a free woman or I can confirm her arrest.

Also to you ass-munchers replying to my tweets by dead-naming or misgendering Chelsea, bugger off.

You can agree or disagree with her actions or point of view or even my reporting, but the misgendering is cruel, stupid, and below the level of political discourse I encourage.

When Chelsea Manning first came to talk to the about 6 members of the media there (including me) I said “I can’t believe this is everyone.”

“That’s what happens. It’s cold,” Manning replied.

Still no word on what’s going on inside. I was told by an attorney who was in the same room as the hearing that his hearing wrapped at 9:27ish. So Chelsea’s secret hearing is about 40 minutes in, so far, presumably.

BREAKING: Manning has been taken into custody for contempt of court.

I’m still outside the courthouse and hope to speak to Manning’s attorney, but WaPo’s @rachelweinerwp confirms that Manning has been taken into custody.

Manning will be held “"until she purges or the end of the life of the grand jury" which could be as long as 18 months, and could be followed by a criminal charge.

I’d be interested to see what @wikileaks’ Assange has to say about all this. Manning has already done some serious time for her contributions, and may be looking at a lot more for refusing to snitch on them.

Myself and about 6 other journalists are now waiting outside the courthouse for at least Manning’s attorney to exit.

Manning herself is unlikely to be taken out the front door, or seen by press for a while.

Manning's attorney confirmed that she's been taken into custody, told me that the max time she could be held in contempt is the term of the grand jury, no more than 18 months.

"Chelsea has tremendous courage. Our primary concern at this point is her health while she's confined."

I didn’t want to do too much about the politics of this, but @CassandraRules is right.

Manning has mostly left-wing supporters, but @wikileaks has only been perceived as helping the right in the past few years, after her prison term.

So #ChelseaManning’s refusal to testify isn’t getting her the support of the left, and the right wing probably won’t “come around” to her because of this.

She’s standing on principle for Assange and @wikileaks here. In other words, this isn’t a political stunt.

Chelsea @xychelsea Manning has released her official statement on being arrested today.

"Imprisoning me for my refusal to answer questions only subjects me to additional punishment for my repeatedly-stated ethical objections to the grand jury system."

Her next hearing in about two weeks is on the issue of unsealing some of what happened (not for release.)

Her attorney does say appeal is on the table.

Until she's out, @xychelsea and @ResistsChelsea are how her friends are communicating on her behalf.

2) They say Assange hasn't been charged. He secretly has, but it was inadvertently disclosed.

A Deputy Sheriff told them Manning is "in a cell by herself" pending "classification" which could take up to 72 hours.

"We treat everyone here well," she claimed. #ChelseaResists

Ahead of the confrontation with the Deputy Sheriff, here's what @medeabenjamin had to say about Manning's incarceration, and why @codepink - primarily an anti-war organization - opposes it.

A second officer withy the jail came out to tell the pro-Manning activists that they "are blocking the gate right here and cars are coming in" and that the activists would have to stand across the street.

No cars went in or out the entire time that the group was there.
