Maybe it's time for Remain+? For a bold package of measures that keeps us in the EU, while making things change for the better.
1) A package of public works projects (£39 billion worth seems apt, even if it meant more borrowing)
Target it at the regions, the North, parts of the UK that so often get missed out. Not stuff that will drag on forever, but spades in the ground within 12 months.
2) End austerity. Scrap all planned future cuts. Pull that austerity car to a halt, and think again. Just do it.
3) Resource the police, properly, so that people feel safer on the streets.
4) Do things that the Government hates but the public likes, such as actually complying with all the EU environmental regulations we keep getting hauled into court over.
5) Set up a new cross-party "Equalising Committee". Its remit: scrutinising all large Government projects over X million pounds to ensure a fair amount is being spent away from London and the SE. Projects would have to get the all-clear from the EC to move forward.
6) Kill HS2. Just do it. Take all that money and spread the wealth around, so that every part of the UK has reliable trains running on reliable rails.
7) Make a bold new offer to Scotland so that it feels a much more equal partner in the Union. Reforge rapidly weaking bonds.
8) Tighten FOM rules using existing EU regulations we don't currently enforce. (We should be honest: for a percentage of the Leave-voting population, this would be seen as a definite plus.) Combine this with going through Home Office processes and policies with a fine-tooth comb.
Root out absolutely everything that deliberately facilitates a "hostile immigration environment" such as ever increasing costs of renewing visas and other permissions. Basically, we want to be as warm and welcoming as possible to those entitled to live here.
It might become slightly harder for some immigrants to stay in the UK, but maintaining their right to do so would be much less of burden for those that do.
8) Introduce civics lessons into schools, focusing on a balanced appraisal of the EU & UK's role as a pillar of Europe.
That's just a few ideas to get the discussion started. The take-away: "remain" doesn't have to be limited to Article 50 revocation. Be open. Be bold. Be pragmatic. Dare to think "better", not just "status quo".
