It was horrible news to wake up to. I was horrified and outraged - we all were. A few hours away from Twitter later, a thread:
Yes, we were all outraged, but then did the terrorists not know this? They knew - and this is exactly the reaction they wanted. Outrage, blind and primal outrage.
I'll have a longer commentary tomorrow (hopefully in the form of an article), but here's three thoughts for now:
1. What happened - especially the images - are deeply traumatizing. But we need to know the goal. It's still the same, and it's one shared by ISIS: Eliminate the gray zone.
2. We're anguished. We're angry. But in our anguish we shouldn't push away friends or allies. If someone offers their love, accept it unconditionally. Allow our communities to embrace and be embraced, to console and be consoled.
3. We're all in the same boat, and the boat is in some rough waters. Things will likely get worse before they get better. Behind this attack on Muslims is a wider war against coexistence, against equality, against democracy. Double down on coexistence. Insist to coexist.
Remember: We're not safe until we're all safe, and we're not free until we're all free.
If the response to terror is to make us cower, then the terrorists have won. No, our response should be to open our arms.
