Knowledge they say is power and from all indication, the Government have deliberately deprived the masses of the required information to enable them demand good governance through the right channel. No wonder the Bible says “my people people die for lack of Knowledge.”
Since they have failed in educating us on the basics of politics, we would do well to educate ourselves.
If you reside in Amuwo Odofin Local Government or Oriade Local Council Development area as the case may be, this information concerns you and i implore you to spread the message to all residents so we can collectively start demanding good governance from our elected Gov officials
To have a proper understanding of this information, it is important to have an overview of how a Country and it’s Government operate with Nigeria as the case study.
Every country has its unique composition depending on the system and type of Government they chose to operate but one thing is constant - It is the coming together of different small groups with defined territorial boundaries under one umbrella name.
In Nigeria’s case, a group of Zones make up a Ward, a group of Ward makes up a constituency, a group of Constituency makes up a Local Government, a group of Local Government makes up a State while a group of States make up the country.
As at today, Nigeria is comprised of 774 Local Government and 36 states excluding the Federal Capital Territory. We have three arms of Government - Executive, Legislative and Judicial arm of Government and we also have three Tiers of Government - Federal, State and Local Gov.
The three arms of Government perform their distinct functions in the three tiers of Government. At the Federal Govt tier, the head of the executive arm is the President, the Senate President is the head of the legislative arm while the Chief Justice of Nigeria heads the judiciary
At the State Government tier, the head of the Executive is the Governor, the speaker of the house of assembly heads the legislative arm while the Chief Justice of the state heads the judiciary.
At the Local Government level, the head of the Executive arm is the Chairman, the leader of the house heads the Legislative arm while the Chief magistrate heads the judiciary.
The FG only recognizes 20 LGA in Lagos & as such the 37 additional LGA created by BAT are regarded as (LCDA) which implies that there do not get allocation from the FG but they however operate like a LG & also share resources with the recognized LGA they were created from.
Amuwo odofin as recognized by the FG has 11 wards:
1 Amuwo housing estate(Ward A)
2 Festac 1(Ward B)
3 Festac 2 (Ward C)
4 Kiri Kiri (Ward D)
5 Amuwo (Ward E)
6 Ijegun (Ward F)
7 Satellite town (Ward G)
8 Irede (Ward H)
9 Ibeshe (Ward I)
10 Igbologun (Ward J)
11 Festac 3 (Ward K)
Ward A, B, C and K make up Constituency 1 which is also known as Amuwo while Ward D, E, F, G, H, I and J make up constituency 2 which is also known as Oriade. Oriade however happens to be one of the 37 LCDA created by BAT and it operates the same way Amuwo odofin operates.
The current chairman of Amuwo is Engr Valentine Buraimoh while that of Oriade is Alhaja Ramota Hassan & these are the people we should be asking why our roads are bad, why the Skill acquisition center in Ijegun has gone moribund and why nothing seems to be working in the LGA/LCDA
We also need to ask the councillors representing each ward what they have done to improve the lives of the people they are representing.
Groups such as youth groups, social groups, estate associations, alumni and other groups needs to as a matter of urgency start putting them on their toes by demanding good governance and accountability.
If you have not been attending your Estate meetings and the likes, it is in your best interest you start now as that’s a very good platform that can be used to request good governance from our elected office holders. I.e Going as a body would have more impact than individually
There is still a lot to be said and I would be posting from time to time but let me stop here for now. I sincerely hope we begin to realize that we actually have the power to make the Government officials do the needful.
