Narcissists expect to exert the same control over OTHER PEOPLES' BODIES as normal people expect to exert over THEIR OWN BODIES. (From Heinz Kohut). Think of the implications of that.
That could be anything from a mother expecting to choose her adult child's food and clothing to every type of assault to murder.
It's like there's only one consciousness - the narcissist's consciousness - and they literally can't wrap their minds around the concept that other people have a consciousness too. Their thoughts literally create the universe.
They become angry and frustrated because other people keep coming at them with their own personalities and ideas, which shatters the narcissist's worldview.
According to Kohut, most narcissists try to exhibit good behavior most of the time. What we see is only the tip of the iceberg. Their minds are bottomless pits of rage that the world has not given them their due.
He says that there is a direct line from narcissism to psychosis. Apparently most of us dip into narcissism at times of stress, but there are some who are living with narcissism all the time, and these people dip into psychosis at times of stress.
Then when the mind breaks and goes totally into psychosis, that's usually the end of the person's sanity and they can't be rehabilitated except in rare circumstances.
Or, more accurately, psychotics can't be analyzed, so psychologists who want to study psychotics study narcissists instead, because it's basically the same thing but at a much worse state.
