Today is the first day that I see no Brexit hope at all. By declining to ask for a long A50 extension, Theresa May has shown that she couldn't care less what Parliament or the country think, she's just an ERG puppet. All bets are now off, folks!
EU are unlikely to save us: they are fed up to their back teeth from being blamed for a Brexit that was not their doing, so they're hardly going to want to step into a "bully" role at this late juncture by throwing their weight around. They'll let us shoot ourselves in the head.
Parliament is also unlikely to be able to play the role of saviour. Getting a legally binding vote through the HOC and through the whole legislative process is a very high hurdle, especially if the Government and other factions actively sabotage and frustrate the process.
That's always been part of the problem: MPs have been so confident of their own ability to wrest control of the Brexit situation in extremis that they've never really sat down and wargamed what would happen if they were *actively* being prevented from doing so.
And you have to remember that there are two parallel processes ejecting us from the EU:
- Article 50 (international law)
- Withdrawal Act (domestic law)
Both have to be changed, and in lockstep, to avoid crashing out on 29 March.
