It’s utterly perplexing why someone who purports to be the voice of reasonable, responsible politics calls May’s deal a bad deal

What does the deal do? Honor the UK commitments on payments and citizens’ rights, puts in place a backstop for Ireland in face of an inflexible demand from EU and concerns about GFA. And that’s all. So why does Philip Stephens attack it?
Does he think a good deal would have the UK run away from its commitments?
Half-baked Brexit, he calls it - echoing the rhetoric of the most extreme Brexiteers

Wish people would stop saying UK made a mistake in triggering Art. 50 too early. Shows great ignorance of the process
There would have been absolutely no talks with EU before Art. 50. Does anyone think two years of silence would have been politically sustainable? May delayed until the last possible moment
Would it have given the UK time to make up its mind? First the UK has made up its mind. Second, in a negotiation process it is not possible to decide anything without the other side

I find this idea of an Asian century completely absurd. And yes, Indian economy exceeded the size of Europe’s four centuries ago but only because everyone lived in misery and there were more people living in misery in India

So, no the Indian economy did not exceed Europe’s by any measure that would be intersting to anyone except the demographer. Not the economist or the historian
As for the future, it is still the case that the global economy is a triangle with three poles, two of are broadly Western. Add India and Japan, their status is ambiguous as well. It’s an Eurasian, not an Asian world

I fear that by creating a select club to deal with China Macron has put the final nail in the coffin of EU unity. Every leader in Europe will interpret this as carte blanche
It would be a dereliction of duty for Slovakia, Malta or Denmark not to negotiate directly with China now that they know France and Germany intend to do it in their name

The frugality identity runs deep. @SenatoreMonti said in January 2012, the "precious" German virtues of fiscal discipline have been "marvellously exported." ft.com/content/4385a5….
Those virtues are embodied in the fiscal rules. Chancellor Merkel calls them the guard rails.
@pierremoscovici echoes Merkel's language. Its all about framing. The eurozone, he says, is a condominium. He, as administrator, must enforce rules so no one touches the supporting walls. .

But, of course, as Romano Prodi insisted , the rules are stupid.

The EU believes there are "clear risks" Brexit will be used to turn the UK into a safe house for tax dodgers, polluters and bad bosses (ft.com/content/9052ed…).
Theresa May threatened to use the rights of British workers, the health of our children and parents, the sustainability of our health service as bargaining chips.
When you adopt measures friendly to tax dodgers, polluters and exploiters of workers you do so *deliberately* to encourage activity of that type that would not otherwise take place. You are inviting in the very worst.
