i think constantly about how disappointing it is to use old computers because their purposes no longer exist
whenever i look at pictures of old text-only computers i think about how they were text-only because their job was to process data and you don't need graphics for a lot of that
and when you sit down at these computers now you can't really think of anything to do with them because they were extremely practical devices intended for specific purposes and people didn't use them except when they had a task
one of the most interesting things you can possibly do with a 1992 vintage computer is install Quicken, and I'm not going to keep track of my finances on a tired old howling 386. my bank does most of that for me online now anyway.
most of us would not have "loved" to have That Computer When It Was New because when it was new, we were 6, or 10, and didn't know what a tax was.
millions of us gush over computers whose purpose was to remember how many bolts were in a warehouse
you can't really substitute fake data for real data, none of us want to put real data in a 40 year old computer because that's a *job*, and what's the fun without data
i tell you, it's all a real bummer.
it's just some generic PC and i wish i had some reason to interact with it
