This is key. May’s deal won 286 votes on Friday, at its absolute limit. People’s vote won 280 today, with Cabinet ministers barred from voting. May’s deal lost by 58 and people’s vote lost by 12. If she thinks she can do it, show us where her extra votes are coming from. It’s on.
Another point: 15 Tories came round to people’s vote tonight. Last week it was just 8. People like Nick Boles, Mike Freer, Mark Garnier, Margot James, moderates who are finally finding the courage to think beyond May’s straitjacketed box. We must work even harder. More can come.
As for Labour: yes, two dozen voting against ref is disappointing. But still, there was movement. Last week 198 voted for ref and 27 against. This time it was 203 and 24 against. I know it’s not yet good enough. But there is momentum - in both senses of the word
