The growing divide between Big Tech's management and its rank and file employees is under-discussed in nervous conversations about woke capitalism.
Engineers may be becoming more fungible thanks to automation and an influx of skilled labor. If the giants turn into massive holding companies, this becomes even more true.
If that happens the rank and file are likely to get more radical, especially if they believe stoking broader culture war fights can undermine the legitimacy of management's restructuring plans.
But at some point that dam will break. Indulging the ideological id of the rank and file not only undercuts the bottom line, it also invites regulation. And it seems to have done nothing to stave of the Dems (see Warren's recent plans).
San Fran is a weird place. Tech is a weird industry. Its political roots are shallow and it's not at all clear the industry can or will work together toward shared goals.
That strikes me as a recipe for labor trouble. I'm not saying we're going to see Big Tech Pinkertons any time soon. But I'm not saying we're not going to see them either.
