1. Currently several states are passing anti-abortion laws: Alabama, Georgia and Indiana and in THESE states, women have a MUCH higher risk of death from pregnancy.
The U.S. has the worst rate of maternal deaths in the developed world. 26/100,000 compared to Finland at 3.8

Maternal death rate in Alabama? More then double California at 12 and it’s on the rise.

Maternal death rate in Indiana? Eight times California’s rate at 41 and it’s on the rise

5. Maybe it’s time for those lawmakers pushing for anti-abortion laws to instead devote funds and energy to maternal health (like California did) rather then forcing women to risk their lives.

1. On what riots, school shootings and acts of racist mass murder have in common.

In 2015, Malcolm Gladwell talked about riots and offered a tentative idea to explain school shootings.

In 1996, the first school shooting occurred. Six more occurred in the two years following.
2. Then Columbine happened and things markedly escalated. Columbine was a turning point. A script was laid out. A narrative.

Gladwell: ‘This (school shootings) is a very contemporary phenomenon. It is an overwhelming American phenomenon.’
3. Gladwell comments that riots will trigger behaviors that people would never normally do. Ok, but how?

In this scenario #Medicare4All has been passed with the repeal of #Hyde so we don't have a problem funding abortions for anyone! But wait...does that overturn #TRAP laws? Waiting periods? Personhood bills? Heartbeat bills? 20 week bans? Specifically fund Planned Parenthood /2
Unfortunately #MedicareForAll wouldn't overturn all those pesky anti abortion laws meaning abortion would be insured if (and that's a big if) you have access to it. The reason you need Planned Parenthood still is because not all doctors choose to perform abortion /3

Last night I promised a thread about #abortion before Roe v Wade legalized it nationally. Until the mid-1800s, common law allowed abortion until "quickening", when fetal movement can be felt. Toxic abortion remedies & doctors competing w midwives led to… 1/
laws outlawing abortion except where pregnancy was likely to be fatal spreading across the country. Bottled abortion remedies could be and were fatal, and doctors, almost all white and male, didn't want midwives competing with them for pregnancy care. 2/

We really need to talk more about #abortion as an option for women.
It's hard to say this and hard to hear it for many, but just because you discover you are pregnant doesn't mean you must carry that pregnancy to term. Your decision will last the rest of your life--and the rest of the life of any child you decide to carry to term.

And no, I am not advocating #abortion.
I'm advocating thinking about parenthood & all it entails.
Because once you have a child, you can't just walk away from that life.
And women/girls are talked into maintaining pregnancies every day.
More discussion would change that.
