#FeministFriday

As Canada’s first Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Minister of International Development, I am proud of our gov’ts record on measures that advance gender equality at home and abroad. 🇨🇦🌎

So here’s a quick reminder of what we’ve done:
✔ After 150 years, 🇨🇦 now has a strategy to prevent and end gender-based violence. This means more support for survivors, creating a more responsive justice system, and improving efforts to prevent GBV in the first place. #FeministFriday
✔ We’re strengthening domestic violence laws – repeat offenders will face a higher maximum sentences and stricter bail conditions and we’ve widened the definition of intimate partner violence to ensure more people are protected. 👨‍⚖️👩‍⚖️ #FeministFriday
✔ We’re investing in the creation of 40,000 new affordable childcare spaces across Canada and creating more flexible parental leave options, such as allowing for parents to extend their 12 months of maternity and parental leave to 18 months. 👨‍👨‍👦👩‍👩‍👧👪 👨‍👧 👩‍👧 #FeministFriday
✔ The new EI Parental Sharing Benefit encourages a more equal distribution of child care responsibilities in the home by providing additional time to parents of a newborn or adopted child when they agree to share the leave. 👶 #FeministFriday
✔ Our new open, transparent & merit-based appointments process means that more than 50% of appointments have been filled by women. And we have passed a law to ensure more women & other underrep’ed groups obtain corporate board & senior management positions. 👩‍⚖️👩‍🎓👩‍💻#FeministFriday
✔ We’ve passed proactive pay equity legislation to ensure equal pay for work of equal value, and legislation to take action on workplace harassment so that all federally-regulated industries and Parliament Hill are free from harassment and sexual violence. 💵⚖#FeministFriday
✔ The new National Housing Strategy means more Canadians will have a safe and affordable place to call home. At least 25% of the NHS will specifically support women, girls, and their families.🏡 #FeministFriday
✔ Historic investments have been made in 250+ women’s orgs to ensure that they don’t have to choose between keeping their doors open and providing vital services to women and their families. Investing in their work is the best way to advance gender equality. #FeministFriday
✔ When more ♀work we'll add $150 billion to 🇨🇦 economy by 2026. We can’t afford to leave that money on the table, so we’re supporting women entrepreneurs to launch, grow & expand their businesses, doubling the number of women entrepreneurs in the next six years. #FeministFriday
✔ In 2016 we launched the inquiry into our stolen sisters. From the interim report, we’ve acted – with better health support & victim services, greater support for families, a review of police policies & practices, and a commemoration fund to ensure they are never forgotten.
✔ Supporting LGBTQ2 communities – Our govt has created a Special Advisor to the PM and LGBTQ2 Secretariat, passed trans rights legislation, is investing in LGBTQ2 service orgs, and has issued an historic apology for the wrongs they experienced at the hands of the fed govt. 🌈
✔ We have created the full Department for Women and Gender Equality and passed gender budgeting legislation to ensure a fairness and equality lens, known as Gender-based Analysis Plus, is applied to all Budget and spending decisions. 🔍🔎 #FeministFriday
✔ Advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls is at the heart of 🇨🇦’s Feminist International Assistance Policy 🌍 bc we know it’s the most effective way to reduce poverty & create more peaceful, inclusive & prosperous societies. #FeministFriday
This is just a sample of the work our government has done to further the advancement of gender equality. It’s a priority for all members of our caucus, because we know that when we invest in women and girls, and advance gender equality, everyone benefits. #FeministFriday
✔ Ensuring that more money – tax free – goes into the pockets of Canadian families who need it most, we introduced the Canada Child Benefit in 2016. The CCB has lifted 300,000 children out of poverty. Nine out of 10 families are better off. 🇨🇦
