We don’t need futuristic tech to make our transportation system better for everyone. We need the political and cultural will to implement the solutions we already have in efficient, equitable ways. And if we continue to lack that will, self-driving cars won’t help a bit.
I'm flying out of Hong Kong's main airport today. It took me 30 minutes to get from downtown to the airport via their "Airport Express" mass transit. During my trip, I took speedy subways, pleasant trams, and ultra-cheap, constantly-available taxis. No new tech required.
Of course, there are many differences between HK and the average American city; density, etc. But it's also evidence that if your city decides to build & prioritize fast, efficient, cheap transportation for its citizens, you don't need help from billionaires or AI; IT JUST WORKS!
