Thread re: CAP Action / CAP: how is this legal? Center for American Progress is a non-profit, 501(c)(3). As of 12/2013, CAP released a list of its corporate donors. @fshakir @DanRiffle @PortiaABoulger @ninaturner @OFB2020 @RoKhanna americanprogress.org/our-supporters…
As of 12/2013, its corporate donors included Walmart, CitiGroup, Wells Fargo, defense contractor Northrop Grumman, America's Health Insurance Plans, & Eli Lilly & Co. @BernieSanders @ewarren @Analilia_Mejia @AnaKasparian @jimmy_dore @cenkuygur @TYTPolitics americanprogress.org/our-supporters…
Other large CAP donors include Embassy of the UAE, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Google, Time Warner, and Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America. @davidsirota @EmilyForCO @DavidCamposSF @AbdulElSayed @truthglow @SavageJoyMarie1 @briebriejoy americanprogress.org/our-supporters…
CAP Action, however, is a 501(c)(4) “non-profit, non-partisan organization.” While 501(c)(4)s are exempt from paying federal income tax, contributions and membership dues to a 501(c)(4) are not tax-deductible as charitable contributions. @ZephyrTeachout irs.gov/pub/irs-tege/e…
However, on CAP’s website, “Center for American Progress is an independent nonpartisan educational institute under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code. Donations are tax deductible. CAP doesn’t support or oppose candidates or political parties.” americanprogress.org/mission/
When you visit CAP Action’s site, corporate donors aren’t permitted to remain anonymous. But they are when you consider the largest donor to CAP Action is...CAP, the non-profit, where corporate donations are tax deductible. What exactly is “more” than $1m in contributions? @AOC
