Thread: I'm annoyed white liberals are resistant to talking about white male privileged on the campaign trail. Not surprised but angry nonetheless. Journalists who write about racial/gender inequality and POC who experience these system keep trying to have conversations. 1/
They tried to talk about it again this weekend following NY Magazine Buttigieg's article, but fans (who are competing for most insufferable fan base since 2016) had the caucacity to crawl into many of their mentions to badger, berate and whitesplain why they are wrong. 2/
Calling out white privilege has nothing to do with Buttigieg's policies (or any of the policies proposed by any of the B-named white dudes) nor does it have anything to do with their personalities and credentials. 3/
Talking about white male privilege on the campaign trail is more about addressing the lens by which we interpret those policies and credentials. These candidates have white male privilege, and women and people of color aren't getting a fair go on the campaign trail. 4/
Don't believe me? How many times have news articles assessed Beto’s or Buttigieg's likability? Harris is literally the second black woman to launch a presidential bid in the history of our nation and raised $12 million. Not impressive according to white reporters and editors. 5/
You know what is impressive? $7 million from Buttigieg -- $5 million less than a woman of color. You can see why many people of color recognize that the goalpost is different for white male candidates than it is for everyone else. 6/
No doubt, someone is going to pop into my mentions to explain how I'm erasing the fact that Buttigieg is gay. Thanks for stopping by Becky or Chad (I'm assuming), but I am very gay. 7/
A gay candidate means more to me than you'll ever know. I spent portions of my life in the shadows ashamed to be gay. Every photo of him and his husband touches my heart. 8/
I also know being black and gay is a different experience than being white/gay. Being gay doesn't mean you can't benefit from white male privilege. After the Obergafell ruling ushered in marriage equality, white gay men in my community (if not every community) literally said 9/
there was nothing left fighting for as far as LGBTQ rights. Of course they thought that. White male privilege shielded them from injustices faced by people of color or others in the LGBTQ community. Buttigieg might not have created that system, but he benefits 10/
Stop saying pointing to his white privilege erases the fact he is gay. It's ridiculous. I'm not going to stop talking about white male privilege on the campaign trail. It is ever-present in the coverage and they way we view what candidates do and don't do. 11/
Any one of the white male dudes running for president, who boast their skills as problem solvers and their ability to tackle tough subjects to unite the country, are more than welcome to chime in about how they benefit from this system. 12/
