I have a rare disagreement with Matt. Small donor $$, early-state polls and Google search data suggests there was a lot of organic interest in Buttigieg before he started to blow up in the mainstream media. (Obviously the CNN town hall helped, but everyone has had one of those.)
I do think now that he's established as a big player, Buttigieg will probably continue to get pretty favorable/friendly media coverage, for lots of reasons that may reflect certain types of media biases. But wasn't being taken very seriously or getting much coverage at first.
I guess people want to classify Buttigieg as a potential surge/scrutiny/decline candidate, a la Herman Cain in 2012. But his rise looks just as much like Hart in '84, Dukakis in '88 or Clinton in '92, candidates who started to poll quite well despite middling name recognition.
