Hey Bret, my friend Tywanza died in that massacre and I myself missed running into Dylann Roof by 5 minutes. Let me take this opportunity to say you’re full of shit.
People in Charleston use a variety of expressions to refer to what happened. Sometimes it’s “a white supremacist murdered 9 black people.” Others I’ve heard include “what happened at Emmanuel,” “somebody decided to kill a bunch of people,” and “because of what that dumbass did.”
If Charleston responded to the massacre by discriminating against white people, it’d be perfectly reasonable for a white person—including me, who lost someone—to at one point say “They started targeting an entire race because somebody did something.”
(But of course no one is actually interpreting her remarks in good faith, much less charitably, so this thread probably won’t do any good. Just one big game.)
