I'm going to call the 2020 election for Trump right now. After almost 3 years Democrats still refuse to acknowledge their failings in 2016. I supported Bernie in the primaries & Clinton in the general. We're in the 3rd year out from Trump's win & Democrats are focused on Trump.
The 2016 election was a group effort. @BernieSanders was 2 blame 4 his own loss. Yes, the primaries WERE rigged. If U deny this, u're denying the words of Donna Brazile, Harry Reid, & @ewarren. That being said, Barack Obama faced the same "rigged" process that was in place in 08.
Obama engaged minority communities. In the LGBT community, his campaign reached out to LGBT leaders. I was on Obama's LGBT Policy & Steering Committee. This outreach mattered because we became surrogates for him within the community & we built support. CC: @ZachAdamson
The LGBT surrogates I met from the @BernieSanders campaign were almost always self-appointed. There never seemed to be a push from the Sanders campaign into the LGBT community, that I experienced. I never saw examples of his campaign staff pushing into my community.
I can't blame the black voters over 30 for not supporting @BernieSanders in 16. Their men & women & children were (and still are) dying in the streets at the hands of police, but the most "progressive candidate" had no day 1 plan 4 their community (h/t @AngryBlackLady @elonjames
Even 2 this day, he prioritizes class struggle over racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia. It was in 16, & it apparently still is a priority now nbcnews.com/card/interview…
His statement about "a government that work for all people” is a dog whistle to white voters. It's essentially saying #AllLivesMatter and it's tiresome. I support @SenSanders policy positions, but as a political tactician, he's abysmal.
He's using a strategy that works in Vermont but has never worked on a national scale. Vermont's black population is 1%, so I understand why he's had success with playing to white people there. But a Democratic POTUS candidate hasn't won white men since 1969.
It's not just a racist strategy, it's a stupid strategy. The Southern Strategy works for Republicans because it relies on racism and hatred of minority communities. That isn't something that can be counted on in the Democratic Party 4 electoral victory, especially in the primary
@SenSanders isn't the most popular candidate right now because he's a great campaigner or orator. It's because he offers a very distinct policy position from Republicans. Democrats need to offer the electorate a different path.
I lived in both Indiana & Wisconsin where the Democratic parties in both states have a history of trying to run against a candidate rather than for distinctly different policy positions. Indiana hasn't had a Democratic majority in the Statehouse/Governors office in over a decade.
Wisconsin still struggles with an entrenched Republican majority as Democratic candidates struggle to find a platform that is distinctly different from Republicans. STOP TRYING IT, THAT STRATEGY DOESN'T WORK!
Also, there's the obsession that the party and a lot of Democratic activists have around #RussiaGate I disagree with @ggreenwald on a lot of things, but he's spot on when it comes to the investigation. IMO, Democrats would rather obsess over Trump than address their own failures.
If Democrats continue down this road (and there's really no proof a year out of the election that it's changed), they'll be facing another 4 years of Trump. It's why I have little hope of any change.
