THREAD: Just landed in Paris. Sitting on the plane waiting for everyone to leave so I can be given my passport back that the GNB took when deporting me. I don’t know where to go from here, literally or figuratively and am quite honestly heartbroken at this point.
Not only is it a humiliating experience being deported but to me, it makes no sense that the #venezuela government would choose to do this. I have been reporting openly and fairly for over two months and actively pursued interviews with Diosdado, Maduro & other senior actors
I have offered full transparency when approaching these interviews - including them having their own footage and airing without edits - because I desperately want EVERYONE to have a say and a voice. I have acted respectfully toward all actors throughout.
Even after being taken and beaten by colectivos I pursued interviews with these groups & wrote a very measured piece (to the point of receiving hatred from anti government activists) and I have gone VERY far in finding the truth behind all this chaos. This has been and is my job
Choosing to deport me, without so much as showing me a piece of paper or giving me a single reason, is bizarre. The longer I have spent in #venezuela the more measured I have become so why not allow me to interview government actors? Why not allow me access instead ?
Deporting me is an act of aggression whereas I have sought nothing but understanding and if the point is to show the world the truth why would you choose silence over dialogue? Why shut the door rather than opening it?
My offer to Diosdado and Maduro stands. I look for nothing but the truth. I have no agenda. I offer true transparency and all I want is a conversation where everyone gets a say. I am ready when you are. All my cards are on the table.
I love venezuela, some say more than I should and many have a problem understanding why I keep coming back to a place that makes work so difficult and heartbreaking. Because I care this work & this country. I still believe in oldschool journalism - showing up & speaking the truth
