People act like impeaching a president is an act of self-destruction because it blew up in the Republican Party’s face in 1998, but that impeachment was transparently a power play in bad faith. Impeachment is a constitutional requirement and we have no idea what would happen. 1/
The truth is, the American public would likely welcome impeachment as the majority of people see through Trump and understand he’s a crook. Impeaching him would turn up the heat on the GOP, who actually have a Trump problem on their hands. 2/
Honestly, Republicans don’t like Trump. He isn’t aligned with their policies, he’s not really a party member, he lords over them as a terror, and he negatively defines their party. Some might welcome the chance to exorcise him. 3/
What we take for granted is that everything continues along a straight line, but if the public welcomed impeachment, if the narrative changed and Republicans felt the pressure, there’s no telling what they’d do. But, honestly, it doesn’t even matter: it’s tge right thing. 4/
Trump has committed high crimes. It’s Congress’s duty to impeach him, both as a check on power and to set future precedent. If they let this go, it’s telling future presidents to go ahead and betray the country and obstruct like mad. 5/
The impeachments we have, in Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, not only weakened their presidencies but sent messages. Johnson’s changed the balance of power and made way for Reconstruction. We’re at a similar turning point now, and the action is justified. 6/
Personally, I’m extremely frustrated the Democrats are so tepid on this. It reeks of playing politics at the expense of the rule of law. Robert Mueller laid out a case for impeachment. He’s a Republican, a serious man. Do your duty. 7/
This is how it’s supposed to work. Quit worrying about optics and polls. Do the right thing and trust that the right thing will win out. Impeach this criminal president, because this thing can get a whole lot worse. 8/8
