Pretty clear Democrats have overwhelming impulse to impeach Trump. Some have tried to keep in check, but might be impossible after Mueller release. One under-discussed aspect is the timing: 1/4
It will take a while for House Dems to rev up impeachment machine. By the time it is going full steam, we will be right in middle of presidential campaign. That is totally uncharted territory. Never happened before... 2/4
Clinton was impeached in 1998-1999 after winning re-election in 1996. Nixon resigned ahead of impeachment in 1974 after winning re-election in 1972. How politicized would impeachment in midst of re-election campaign be? 3/4
Standard impeachment defense is to portray impeachers as partisan. Impeachers deny, declare devotion to rule of law, etc. Interesting to see play out in context of campaigning. 4/4 End.
