The bombings in #SriLanka underscore growing concerns about the resurgence of jihadist terrorism in Southeast Asia. Inspiration from ISIS seems to be playing a role, but the roots of Islamist extremism in the region are deep. Any group can awaken and draw on them. /1
Is the jihadist surge in Southeast Asia a product of Syria's civil war? Although we do not yet know if returned ISIS veterans were involved in these attacks, the perpetrators clearly displayed considerable operational skills. The question is: Were these gained in #Syria? /2
We may be approaching a new dynamic in the struggle. Jihadist terrorists are attacking Christian targets ... in retaliation for right-wing fanatics' attacks on Muslim targets ... in retaliation for past Muslim attacks on Christians ... some which occurred centuries ago. /3
We have seen these contests at the local level, but it appears that the fight is becoming globalized. /4
This may be the logical outcome of the homegrown terrorist and foreign fighter phenomenon, in which increasing numbers of individuals, distant from actual jihadist fronts, are drawn into the conflicts, via travel or remote participation. /5
The end result is a worldwide religious war between two sets of fanatics.

If everyone can be a warrior, then their battlefield is everywhere. /end
