1. Can we we talk about what the Trump campaign is doing on Facebook right now?

Because if 2016 election taught us anything its that FACEBOOK CAN BE PRETTY IMPORTANT

So let's dive in.

2. The Trump campaign is running hundreds of new ads every day on Facebook. They are highly targeted and most run for just a day..

They do not appear to be reviewed in a systematic way because many of the ads blatantly violate Facebook's ad rules

3. Remember, Facebook made $15 BILLION in the last three months. They could easily afford to review all the political ads that are run every day.

But they don't because it would COST THEM MONEY and make the product LESS ATTRACTIVE TO THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN

4. Today, the campaign launched hundreds of ads with text explicitly targeting women in various cities in textbook. Including gender identity in ads blatantly violates Facebook rules.

The rules aren't very useful though if no one enforces them.

5. I emailed facebook about the ads at noon. At 3PM, they asked what my deadline was. By the time I get a response, it won't even be Melania's b-day anymore!

Targeting women seems innocuous by the Trump campaign is learning the rules don't apply to them

2. Yesterday at 1PM, I contacted Facebook and flagged dozens of ads from the Trump campaign that falsely claimed Democrats are advocating "a repeal of the Second Amendment."

This violates Facebook's policy against "false and misleading ads."

3. At 7PM Monday, Facebook confirmed that it had received my question and promised to get back to me. I had given the company a deadline of 10PM.

By Tuesday morning, I heard nothing from Facebook but all the ads that I had flagged were marked "inactive"

1. The last three years have not been good for Facebook. Things started going off the rails after the 2016 election when people discovered that Facebook let its platform be used to disseminate pro-Trump misinformation. popular.info/p/rage-against…
2. Some of the shadiest stuff was done by the Trump campaign itself. In an interview with Bloomberg days before the election, the campaign bragged that it was using Facebook to suppress African- American votes in crucial states. popular.info/p/rage-against…
3. In the aftermath, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg pledged to fix the problem. Usually, he sets an ambitious personal development goal each year, like learning Mandarin. In 2018, Zuckerberg resolved to fix the company. popular.info/p/rage-against…
