In addressing Chinese-American parents testifying to keep the #SHSAT @MarkTreyger718 *incorrectly* sites 1927 Lum v Rice case as about Chinese being excluded from public schools. It was actually abt them wanting to be classified as white and therefore not assigned to black school
Chinese-Americans in this case did not sue to end segregation, just to benefit from it. So, I think this case ironically did not make the point he was trying to make. (SCOTUS, btw, ruled Chinese could not go to white school)

Kind of says it all that two ultra-wealthy guys decided it is time to do something about NYC public schools only when there is a real effort to integrate the specialized high schools. nytimes.com/2019/04/27/nyr…
Think of all that could be addressed with these millions and with this type of political clout, but they would rather spend their money lobbying legislatures to maintain a system that denied nearly all black and Latino children access to the city's elite public high schools.
Also, it is just plain dishonest when people say changing admissions standards from a single test to one that reward students who have studied hard and gotten good grades for three years of middle school as lowering standards. It's a racial dog whistle no matter who says it.

This story shows how you get these types of stories right. It has the data, it has the history, it has the analysis, and then it has these amazing quotes that from those impacted that explain so much to those who may otherwise not get the problem.
It used straightforward language instead of dancing around race -- ie: Black Americans remain the most segregated because most white people have avoided living around them. This is a fact backed up by data, fair housing testing, social science research and polling. So, say it.

Consider that this is *all* many Americans learn about Reconstruction. We can’t grapple with slavery & its legacy be it is largely relegated to a footnote instead of a central organizing factor of American life. So, in the minds of many white people, that’s what it was: a blip.
The entire conversation around reparations, racial justice, inequality, race-specific policies is warped by how poorly we are taught this history, by the intentional erasure. We don’t even have a basis to start the conversation. And this is intentional, of course.
Many white people truly believe that the experiences of the Irish or Italians or even Mexicans was akin to that of black Americans. It is easy to get mad, but what’s true is it’s because that is literally what we are taught. It’s the only way we can sustain the myth of America.

Did/Do I have more "worth" or "merit" than anyone else? I don't think so. But I was and am still defined by the fact that I went to Columbia & Brooklyn Tech b4 that: people take stock in that. That's why this #SHSAT convo is so impt for me. I have enormous pride & guilt in that.
I don't think I deserve more privileges or titles than anyone else. Sure, I worked damn hard as a kid, but that was my poverty mindset, that I would be a nobody and still poor working-class if I didn't get my family out of poverty. That was an intense mindset for a kid. #shsat

How does anyone trust the #SHSAT when they are making correction to problematic items from year to year? how do we not know the problems in the Handbooks aren't reflected in the actual test?
I'm going to work my way through the handbook and point out challenges with the items included.

Pearson creates somewhere around 18 forms (with I believe 20% overlap in each form) each year. Most testing companies do not try to produce this many items in 1 year.
Look at this item: 1st version is 2018 handbook 2nd is 2019.

It took me quite a while to wade through 2018 item to find issue being tested. How much time does format of time waste from the test of a 8th grader?

The 2019 item addresses that problem.

Just for a bit of balance when I was trying to get out of special ‘schooling’ in the 1980s none of the local public schools in Campbelltown NSW would take me. Only a local Marist school was accessible & made the effort #schools #education
The principal of one public school looked at me, snorted and said ‘well what are we going to do with this little problem hey?’
The second public school said I’d have to skip maths & science classes and do them in a corridor or the library
