As @Lollardfish argues in the piece, history is doing just fine at Yale, where it is "safe" to major in history. Make it safe to major in history everywhere and you'll see more history majors.
How many of us have heard this from students: I like (history, philosophy, English, languages, art history, etc...) but... When I went to college 30 years ago, there was no "but" in that sentence. This is what has changed for the worse. Not students.
Liberal Arts grads do well over time in terms of salary, which is why free college is important. It allows those humanities a chance to get into the world without an anchor holding them back, so they can advance. chronicle.com/article/Over-T…
