THREAD:
I’d like to clarify a few things :)
I finished my PhD two and a half years ago. This summer I will have my fourth book out. And I’ve received many support and kind messages and I am grateful but I have also seen some snarky comments that I will address because I won’t let
anyone dismiss my hard work without having a word or two about it. I have worked relentlessly. Dedicating my evenings and weekends, taking maximum 10 days off per year, why? Because I was in a precarious situation and could not control what was happening to me so I decided to
control what I could: my work. Also I am extremely passionate about what I do. I am extremely proud of all my books (monograph and edited collections). Also bear in mind that for a collection to be out it takes around 2-3 years so I started two of them while finishing my PhD.
There’s no other way. Not for me anyway. I got the opportunities, I was lucky enough to make the time. And people who tell me I should slow down because I make academia toxic by doing that: no, no, I do not. I play with the cards I’ve been given and I could not sink after all
the sacrifices my family and I had made. So I decided to do everything I could to secure a permanent position so I had no regret.
When you don’t know someone background, don’t pretend you do.
I’m not saying everyone has had the same opportunities and I’m here to support anyone
in academia and beyond if need be. But no my work is not the problem. I will keep doing what I love. This is who I am.
I do not do history, I am a historian and I couldn’t be anything else.
