The 1922 Committee executive blinks, and gives Theresa May two more weeks. She will set out a timetable to quit in early June, after the WAB.
Brexiteers on the '22 executive are unhappy, and say they've bottled it. But the reality of the situation is Graham Brady has forced the PM to resign this summer earlier than she wanted to, Brexit done or not - after she gets one last shot at it.
I am told Theresa May was very emotional during the 1922 meeting, at the point where she pleaded for more time. One in the room described her as "very teary". "Her eyes were very watery", and she had to blow her nose at one stage.
After the PM left, only "4 or 5" (out of 18) 1922 exec members argued for a vote on a rule change. Alec Shelbrooke and Antoinette Sandbach were the most vociferous against a vote, and most of the room agreed with them.
…but a May loyalist in the room takes a different view: “She was incredibly steely and determined about what she wants to do. If there’s no WAB, there will be no Brexit”.
Theresa May had quite a tasty barb for a certain member of the '22 exec, I hear. She told the room she knew there will be "some people around this table" who would want to take party in a future leadership contest.
