Here it is. May goes short - requests a new Brexit delay from ⁦@eucopresident⁩, but only until June 30 this year.
A big but: PM also announces UK will hold European Parliament elections on May 23 if no exit before then. So, she’s discreetly allowing the EU to impose a much longer flextension than June 30, without the political strength to ask for one herself. Very May-ist.
Remember, June 30 is the extension May also asked for two weeks ago. The EU27 threw that out within an hour, and put May in a room without windows for 5 hours until they came up with their own plan. Expect exactly the same again in Brussels next Weds.

Looks like Steve Barclay will resign next week if the deal falls at MV3 and PM applies for a longer delay. He makes it clear he won’t support that... so she’ll need a 4th Brexit Secretary.
Barclay’s words here also directly contradict No10 last night (and @DLidington this morning) who insisted the whole Cabinet have agreed to back PM’s two delay plan, despite the free vote.
And if Barclay goes, how can Cairns, Fox, Grayling, Leadsom, Mordaunt, Truss and Williamson stay on with any personal integrity intact, having also protested against the policy last night?

I’m told Fox, Williamson and Barclay plus half the whips office is curently in the No Lobby, voting AGAINST their own PM’s motion.
Confirmed: Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay voted AGAINST the PM's motion he had just spoken from the Despatch Box in favour of to close the debate. Go figure.
Wow. A total of eight Cabinet ministers (Steve Barclay, Alun Cairns, Liam Fox, Chris Grayling, Andrea Leadsom, Penny Mordaunt, Lis Truss and Gavin Williamson) plus 188 Tory MPs in total voted against PM's motion to delay Brexit - close to two thirds of all her MPs.

Breaking: Govt defeated - Commons demands No Deal is taken off the table permanently; 312 v 308, majority of 4. This puts May in a massive bind.
Tory Brexiteer bid for a managed No Deal - the Malthouse Compromise - defeated by 374 v 164, a majority of 210.
It's "total carnage" in the division lobbies, one Tory MP says. Another: "Some who are not prepared to vote against the amended motion are just being allowed to go the pub".

EU source describes ‘broad support’ amongst EU members for #Brexit flextension (The term appears to grate with some but this is how Donald Tusk is describing the proposal) BUT /1
A number of countries incl .. you guessed it - France .. demanding clear plan from Theresa May as to what she would use extension time for. They insist granting the UK a new #Brexit delay is not a given BUT /2

May has lost badly enough that talk of MV4 looks pretty optimistic.

The door to May 22 extension closes...and the one to a long extension opens, with #EUCO in April 10.

That requires two things... /2
1) That the U.K. agrees to hold European Parliament elections on May 23-26

2) Per Mar #EUCO concs, that the U.K. “indicates a way forward”. /3

The EU is sceptical of PM May’s chances of getting the Brexit deal through parliament. EU27 ambassadors were told today that the UK faces two choices: no-deal or a long extension.
Both choices come with a political and economic cost for the 27. A long extension would see the UK take part in the bloc’s decision making processes, while no-deal could see some member states & sectors require financial assistance.

It’s understood her original preference was to ask EU for a short extension which could be lengthened if needed, or a long one with a break clause in it.
But @MichelBarnier told me yesterday that it’s short or long, not both.
.@MichelBarnier also made clear that a specific reason must be given to warrant an extension: “Needs to be linked to something new - a new event, new political process.“
So:
- election?
- 2nd referendum?
- new cross-party political declaration (removing May red lines)?

EU decision on extension depends a) on what PM asks for b) on EU leaders once in a room together Thurs. Fair to say: all options stil on table and EU leaders want to avoid no deal. There will be no EU “no” to an extension request /2

I have long maintained that a second referendum on #Brexit is the only way out of the UK's current conundrum.

But a few aspects of this have been nagging at me.

Now having been put on the spot by @edaross I am going to explore this a bit more in a thread.

First, if a #PeoplesVote is to happen, it requires an extension of the #Article50 negotiation period - because it would take a good 20 weeks to organise such a referendum, as @ConUnit_UCL argue convincingly here:

At the time of writing we are 123 days, or just over 18 weeks away from exit day 29.3.2019

If Commons has its "Meaningful Vote" (that failing might be the starting gun for a referendum process) on 10 December that is 104 days, less than 15 weeks from exit day. Too tight.
